Headache and Nausea after a Pennsylvania Car Crash: It Could be Whiplash

Your car was rear-ended when you were stopped for construction traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway. Fortunately, you weren’t seriously injured. You feel a little stiff and sore, but that’s it. If only you could shake those flu symptoms that you picked up in the emergency room.

If you are experiencing headache and nausea after a car accident, you may not be suffering from a virus. Headache, nausea and other “flu-like” symptoms could be signs of whiplash or another neck injury.

Signs of a Neck Injury After a Car Crash

  • Stiff neck
  • Decreased range of motion in neck
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo or balance problems
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Pain, tingling or numbness is any body part
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty concentrating

The neck is a very sensitive part of your body. It is home to the base of your spine and the nerves of the spinal cord. The force of a car accident can push the bones of your neck out of alignment and put pressure on the spinal nerves. If a nerve is pinched, bruised or damaged, you can experience pain or numbness in your arms, legs, hands, feet, fingers or toes. But, the pain can be mild, especially at first.

The injury is also likely to cause swelling and soft tissue damage. It’s the soft-tissue damage that causes flu-like symptoms like pounding headaches, dizziness and nausea. These symptoms are especially common with whiplash injury.

Fortunately, most of these effects are temporary and will go away once your neck injury is treated. Tell your doctor about your symptoms and ask him to do a CT scan or MRI to check for injury in your neck. Soft tissue injuries like whiplash won’t show up on an x-ray.

Treatment of car accident neck injuries usually includes rest, medication, and physical therapy. You may need to take time off work in order to heal properly.  These costs should be covered by the insurance company of the at-fault driver.
